Getting a good and proper sleep is imperative. However sleeping on a bad mattress can take a toll on the quality of your sleep and your health. This is something known and recognized by all, but only a few actually take some action upon it. Using a good mattress is more than just a luxury, it’s a need. Most people tend to forget this and choose to continue using their old mattresses with the main objective of saving money, although this can affect their lives adversely and cost them a lot more than money.  A mattress that’s too firm, too soft, not supportive enough or just plain uncomfortable can often be all it takes to prevent you from getting the quality sleep you need.

Ways in which using an inappropriate mattress affects your health:

  • Back pain: Common problem of sleeping on an old mattress is back pain. A low quality mattress can often force you to sleep in an unnatural position that twists and strains your back. If you need to twist awkwardly to feel comfortable in your bed, you could eventually injure your back.
  • Obesity: Sleep deprivation promotes binge-eating and overeating. People that don’t get enough sleep, or often wake up during the night, have a higher risk of becoming obese than their peers. This is because the drowsiness and lack of energy caused by sleep deprivation can lead to overeating.
  • Weak immune system:  Long nights without sleep and low quality sleep at home can wear down your immune system and make your more likely to become sick. This is how you will become more prone to colds, as well as other type of illnesses, even severe ones
  • Triggering allergies: Old mattresses are filled with bed bugs and dust mites. These microscopic creatures eat the dead cells your body sheds. The older your mattress is, the higher the likelihood of it containing large numbers of dust mites. Dust mites can lead to a number of skin and reparatory conditions such as eczema, asthma and sore throat
  • Drowsiness:  Low quality sleep will usually leave you feeling tired and drowsy. If your mattress prevents you from falling asleep, it could have an effect on your alertness throughout the day. If you can’t fall asleep easily on your mattress, it could be causing you to feel unnaturally tired during the day.
  • Hinder memory retention: Sleeping on a bad mattress can hinder your ability to remember things. During the deep sleep, called REM, the memories are being formed, so if you can’t enter the REM sleep, your brain is not going to form the memories the right way, which leads to memory impairment.

Hence, we can conclude that using an inappropriate mattress as a number of drawbacks. It can affect our health in more number of ways than we can imagine, using a good mattress is the need for the hour which everybody should recognize.
