Mattress Thickness Guide: 5, 6 or 8 Inch, What's Best?

"How many inches?" is one of the first questions people ask in a mattress shop in India, usually on the assumption that a thicker mattress is a better one.

Thickness on its own says less than you'd expect. A dense 5 inch latex mattress can support you better than an 8 inch mattress made of cheap foam. The materials inside count for more than the height.

What Thickness Affects

A thicker mattress has room for more layers, such as a comfort layer, a transition layer, a support core and sometimes springs. That allows a more complex feel, though more layers aren't automatically better.

Thickness also changes the feel. Thicker mattresses often feel plusher because there's more material to sink into, while thinner ones feel firmer and more grounded.

It raises or lowers your bed, which affects how easy it is to get in and out. And more material means more weight, especially with dense materials like latex.

Why Material Comes First

Natural latex is much denser and more resilient than ordinary foam. A 5 or 6 inch latex mattress can give the same support as, or better support than, a much thicker mattress made of low-density foam, which compresses and develops body impressions within a few years. When comparing two mattresses, find out what they're made of before comparing their height.

5 Inch

A 5 inch mattress suits people who like a firm, grounded feel, children and teenagers, and beds with deep frames or storage boxes. In natural latex, 5 inches gives most adults all the support they need, and it has long been the standard thickness for a pure latex mattress.

6 Inch

Six inches leaves room for a comfort layer over a solid support core. It's a good fit for most adults, including back and side sleepers, and keeps the mattress manageable to lift and turn.

8 Inch

An 8 inch mattress suits people who like a plush, hotel-style bed, as well as couples and heavier sleepers. Pocket spring hybrids are usually this thick or more, since they need room for the springs plus the comfort layers.

10 Inch and Above

These are usually luxury hybrids or pillow-tops. They feel very soft, but they're heavy, need deep fitted sheets, and most people don't need that much height.

Practical Checks

Measure how deep your bed frame is. A thin mattress inside a deep wooden frame or box bed can sit too low. If anyone in the family has knee or back problems, avoid a bed that ends up very high or very low. Thick mattresses need deep-pocket fitted sheets. Heavier sleepers generally do better with thicker mattresses that have stronger support layers. Side sleepers often like the extra cushioning of a thicker comfort layer, while stomach sleepers tend to prefer a firmer, flatter surface.

The Boston Range by Thickness

The Boston Zenith is 8 inches, combining graphite latex with high-density pocket springs for a plush, hotel-style bed.

FAQs

Which mattress thickness is best for adults?

Most adults are comfortable on 6 inches, though a dense 5 inch natural latex mattress also supports well. Material quality matters more than height.

Is a thicker mattress better for back pain?

Not necessarily. Support depends on the density and type of material, not thickness. A supportive medium-firm mattress is what helps most.

Is 5 inch enough for a latex mattress?

Yes. Natural latex is dense and resilient, so 5 inches of good latex gives most people strong, long-lasting support.
